About Gracie Barra
The world's largest Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu organization, founded on the principle of “Jiu-Jitsu for Everyone.”
Our Story
Gracie Barra was founded in 1986 by Master Carlos Gracie Jr. in Barra da Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. What started as a single school has grown into the most successful Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu organization in the world, with over 1,000 schools across every continent.
The name “Gracie Barra” combines the legendary Gracie family name with “Barra,” the neighborhood where Master Carlos Gracie Jr. established his first academy. The red shield represents unity, excellence, and the warrior spirit that defines our community.
Today, Gracie Barra continues to grow under the vision of “one school in every suburb of the world,” making Jiu-Jitsu accessible to everyone regardless of age, gender, or fitness level.

“One School in Every Suburb of the World”
Master Carlos Gracie Jr.'s vision is to make Jiu-Jitsu accessible to everyone, everywhere. This global mission drives us to maintain the highest standards while welcoming all who wish to learn.
