What to Expect in Your First Jiu-Jitsu Class

Nervous about your first class? Here's a complete guide to what happens during a typical beginner session at Gracie Barra.

Your First Jiu-Jitsu Class: A Complete Guide

Taking your first Jiu-Jitsu class can feel intimidating, but at Gracie Barra Burleigh Heads, we make sure every beginner feels welcomed and supported. Here's exactly what to expect when you walk through our doors.

Before You Arrive

What to Bring:

  • Comfortable workout clothes (no zippers or pockets)
  • Water bottle
  • Positive attitude
  • Don't worry about having a gi (uniform) for your first class. We provide loaner gis for trial students.

    Arriving at the Academy

Plan to arrive 10-15 minutes early for your first class. Our front desk team will:

  • Welcome you and show you around
  • Have you fill out a brief waiver
  • Provide you with a loaner gi if needed
  • Introduce you to the instructor
  • The Class Structure

A typical GB1 Fundamentals class at our Burleigh Heads academy follows this structure:

    Warm-Up (10-15 minutes)

Light exercises and movement drills to prepare your body. Don't worry. The warm-up is designed for all fitness levels.

    Technique Instruction (25-30 minutes)

The instructor demonstrates techniques, breaking them down step by step. You'll practice with a partner at your own pace.

    Drilling (10-15 minutes)

Repetition of techniques with a partner, focusing on proper form and timing.

    Cool-Down/Questions

Stretching and an opportunity to ask questions.

    What You'll Learn

In a typical first class, you might learn:

  • Basic posture and movement
  • A fundamental position (like guard or mount)
  • A simple technique appropriate for beginners
  • Jiu-Jitsu etiquette and hygiene
  • The Gracie Barra Difference

What makes your first class at GB Burleigh Heads special:

  • Structured Curriculum: The same teaching method used in 1,000+ schools worldwide
  • Certified Instructors: ICP-certified teachers with proven teaching ability
  • Supportive Environment: No egos, just people helping people learn
  • All Levels Together: More experienced students help beginners
  • Tips for Your First Class

    1. Don't compare yourself: Everyone starts as a beginner

    2. Tap early, tap often: If something feels uncomfortable, tap and reset

    3. Ask questions: Instructors love helping newcomers

    4. Breathe: Relax and enjoy the experience

    5. Commit to three classes: The first class is overwhelming. It gets better!

    After Your First Class

    You'll probably feel:

  • Tired (Jiu-Jitsu uses muscles you didn't know you had!)
  • Overwhelmed (there's a lot to learn)
  • Excited (because you just did something amazing)
  • Give yourself credit. You took the hardest step: showing up.
