Complete guide to dressing for your first BJJ class. What to bring, what to avoid, and everything about the gi uniform.

What to Wear to Your First BJJ Class

Starting something new is always a bit nerve-wracking, and not knowing what to wear can add to the anxiety. Here's everything you need to know about dressing for your first Jiu-Jitsu class at Gracie Barra Burleigh Heads.

For Your Trial Class

What We Provide:

At Gracie Barra Burleigh Heads, we provide loaner gis (uniforms) for trial students, so you don't need to buy anything before your first class.

What to Wear Underneath:

  • Athletic shorts (no pockets or zippers)
  • T-shirt or rash guard
  • For women: sports bra
  • What to Avoid:

  • Clothing with zippers, buttons, or pockets
  • Jewelry of any kind (remove before class)
  • Long pants with rough material
  • Anything that could scratch training partners
  • The BJJ Gi (Kimono)

Once you decide to continue training, you'll need a Gi:

    What is a Gi?

    The traditional uniform consisting of:

  • Jacket: Heavy woven cotton top
  • Pants: Reinforced cotton or ripstop pants
  • Belt: Indicates your rank
  • Gracie Barra Official Gi:

At Gracie Barra schools, we wear the official GB gi. This ensures:

  • Consistent quality and fit
  • Unity among students worldwide
  • Proper weight and durability for training
  • Gi Care Tips:

  • Wash after every training session
  • Don't leave in your bag. Mold loves wet gis!
  • Hang dry to preserve longevity
  • Have 2-3 gis if training frequently
  • For No-Gi Classes

No-Gi classes don't use the traditional uniform:

    What to Wear:

  • Rash guard (compression shirt)
  • Grappling shorts or spats (compression tights)
  • No pockets, no zippers
  • Why Rash Guards?

  • Protects skin from mat burn
  • Prevents gi-like grips
  • Keeps you cooler during intense training
  • Wicks away sweat
  • Hygiene Essentials

    Always Bring:

  • Clean training clothes
  • Sandals/flip-flops (never walk barefoot off the mats)
  • Towel
  • Water bottle
  • Deodorant (apply before class!)
  • Hygiene Rules:

  • Trim fingernails and toenails
  • Shower before class if possible
  • No training if you have any skin conditions
  • Clean your gear after every session
  • What Else to Bring

    First Class Checklist:

  • Comfortable workout clothes (if no loaner gi)
  • Water bottle
  • Sandals
  • Hair ties (for long hair)
  • Positive attitude
  • Optional:

  • Notebook for technique notes
  • Mouthguard (recommended)
  • Ear guards (if concerned about cauliflower ear)
  • Cost Expectations

    Trial Period:

At GB Burleigh Heads, your trial class is free and we provide the loaner gi.
